10 reasons to visit Central America during the rainy season
WHAT IS CENTRAL AMERICA?
Central America is the skinny region that connects North America and South America (well, technically it’s on the North American continent). It consists of seven countries: Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Click on any of these to go to that country page: inspire your trip and learn from our mistakes!
Sandwiched between the Pacific and Caribbean Oceans, these Latin American countries are known for their biodiversity, vibrant cultures, and incredible landscapes. Between Panama and Belize, there are volcanoes to hike, gorgeous beaches, tropical rainforests, and more biodiversity than you can shake a stick at!
Most of the Central American countries are united by a rich cultural heritage, with indigenous Mayan culture mixing with colonial Spanish culture, and (except Belize) a common language: Spanish!
Some travellers (like us!) also include Mexico in their Central America itineraries, although many Mexicans would agree that they belong firmly in the ‘North American’ Region. Either way, Mexico is a great addition to the seven countries above!
WHEN’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT CENTRAL AMERICA?
Central America is warm, with a tropical climate. There’s a rainy season and a dry season. The Pacific coast tends to be more affected by these two seasons. Whereas the Caribbean coast tends to be more stable in weather patterns year-round.
We’re firm believers that there is no definitive ‘best time’ to visit Central America. Each season brings its own unique charm and challenges.
WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE CENTRAL AMERICA?
The dry season, which runs from December to April, is typically the most popular time for tourists. Drier seasons may have warmer temperatures, calmer skies and sunnier weather – ideal conditions for exploring! But these months are busier, and you may not have the chance to be so spontaneous in your travel plans as the best activities and accommodation can book out quickly.
The rainy season, from May to November, is often overlooked by travellers. But those who visit Central America during this time can enjoy a different, equally beautiful side of the region. Rainy season brings lush greenery and lower tourist numbers, meaning you can be a little more spontaneous and last-minute. The weather conditions may be more interesting for photographers and wildlife spotters too, as a lot of animals are more active when it rains and the temperatures cool slightly.
However, infrastructure across the region can vary. You should always plan enough time for your journey, bring a raincoat, and always expect to get wet feet!
A NOTE ON CLIMATE CHANGE...
It’s important to note that climate change is causing unpredictable weather patterns, and sometimes the wet and dry seasons arrive earlier or later. No matter which region you visit, look up the weather before you go so that you know what to expect!
10 REASONS TO VISIT CENTRAL AMERICA IN THE RAINY SEASON
I like to travel off-season. I don’t mind the weather not being perfect (heck, we live in Scotland so we’re used to four seasons in a day!). But I do enjoy that lower visitor numbers let me have a more intimate and immersive cultural experience whilst combatting overtourism.
That said, what’s best for me isn’t necessarily what’s best for you. You need to do your research and figure out which season is best for you, not which season is the best ‘overall’.
Here are some of my favourite reasons to visit Central America during the rainy season:
#1 LUSH GREEN LANDSCAPES
The rainy season breathes life into Central America’s landscapes, turning forests, mountains, and fields into vibrant shades of green. Waterfalls become more impressive. Rivers turn from a trickle into a stream. And the overall scenery becomes more dramatic and photogenic. Central America during the rainy season is the perfect time for photographers to capture the region in its most vibrant state.
#2 UNIQUE WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES
The rainy season is prime time for wildlife spotting, another reason to visit Central America during the rainy season. The cooler temperatures and wet weather mean that animals are more active and easier to see. In Costa Rica, you might catch a glimpse of nesting sea turtles on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, or a sloth hanging out in the treetops. In Panama, the rainy season is a great time to see humpback whales migrating through the waters. The rains also bring out vibrant frogs, colourful birds, and other creatures that thrive in wetter conditions.
#3 FEWER CROWDS
Most people don’t visit Central America during the rainy season. Travelling to Central America during the rainy season means you’ll be able to explore popular destinations like Costa Rica’s Tortuguero National Park, Guatemala’s Volcan Acatenango, or Belize’s Great Blue Hole without the usual crowds. You’ll have the chance to experience these iconic spots with a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere.
Fewer crowds also mean that you can be more spontaneous in your adventures. Most accommodation and tour agencies will have last-minute spots, you might even save some money…
#4 BETTER PRICES
Fewer visitors means more competition between companies for your tourist dollars! Hotels, tour agencies, and flight companies often lower their prices, giving you another reason to visit Central America during the rainy season.
You’ll find great accommodation, excursions, and transport deals, making the rainy season an ideal time for budget travellers to visit Central America. Plus, many tour operators offer discounts, so you can enjoy popular activities like diving, zip-lining, or wildlife watching for less.
#5 BETTER SURF
Central America, particularly Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, is one of the world’s best surf spots. Better surf is another key reason to consider whether you should visit Central America in the rainy season.
If you’re a surfer, the rainy season brings bigger and more consistent waves to Central America’s Pacific coast. Whether you’re catching waves in El Salvador’s Punta Roca, Costa Rica’s Tamarindo, or Nicaragua’s San Juan del Sur, you’ll find that the wet season delivers some of the best surf conditions of the year!
#6 MORE PLEASANT TEMPERATURES
Rain doesn’t have to limit your adventures! In fact, booking your visit to Central America in the rainy season might actually be more comfortable for hiking and exploring.
While the rain might sound like a downside, it provides a welcome break from the heat. The occasional downpours are usually short and sharp, leaving behind cooler, more comfortable conditions for exploring. Plus, you’ll often find sunny mornings and rain in the afternoons or evenings, allowing for plenty of outdoor activities during the day.
The rain can be heavy, but it’s usually over pretty quickly. So if you feel the rain coming, dive into the nearest cafe and relax for an hour or so, before continuing on your day.
#7 CULTURAL FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
The rainy season coincides with some of Central America’s most vibrant cultural events. For example, Costa Rica celebrates Independence Day in September with parades and traditional music, while Guatemala’s Day of the Dead in November features colourful kites and family celebrations. A visit to Central America during the rainy season offers a unique glimpse into the local culture and traditions.
#8 STUNNING SUNSETS AND DRAMATIC SKIES
The mix of rain and sun often leads to dramatic skies, with impressive cloud formations and vibrant sunsets. There’s nothing like watching the sun dip below the horizon after a day of exploring, with the sky painted in hues of orange, pink, and purple.
#9 PEACEFUL BEACHES AND HIKING TRAILS
Central America’s beaches are stunning year-round, but in the rainy season, you can often have them all to yourself. Picture pristine stretches of sand, gentle waves, and not another soul in sight. It’s the perfect time to relax, unwind, and soak up the natural beauty without the usual beach crowds.
Popular hiking trails are also quieter and more pristine. Just don’t forget your rain coat!
#10 SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Visiting Central America during the rainy season helps support local businesses and communities that rely on tourism but face a drop in income during these months. By travelling in the off-season, you’re contributing to the local economy and helping sustain jobs and services in the region.
Visiting Central America during the rainy season is a chance to experience a quieter, greener, and often more affordable side of this incredible region. With the right preparation and a sense of adventure, the rainy season can be a magical time to explore Central America’s natural wonders and vibrant cultures!
